The song was originally written as the ending song to the computer game Portal. I wanted to make it into a WoW video for a long time but could never find a "hook"
that would make it make sense in that setting. Then I did.
Some people have said that I should have used a version of the song with Coulton himself singing, instead of GLaDOS, because they find GLaDOS' voice annoying,
or because they can't get past a female singing in a video about the male Lich King. It never occurred to me to use a non-GLaDOS version though, because the
video is referencing Portal and Portal is all about GLaDOS. Coulton's version is an additional step removed from that reference, which I don't think would
work well.
... and then I changed my mind and made a second version of "Still Alive" using Jonathan Coulton's voice (the two audio tracks lined up perfectly, so I didn't have much
work to do for the second video). The Internet seems to prefer the second version, and as we all know, the Internet is always right.
It sort of feels like I should make one final version of the video, where the last shot is of Bolvar Fordragon, the new Lich King (spoiler alert). We'd hear the final line,
"still alive...", as we see him covering himself with ice to spend an eternity of torment keeping the Scourge from overrunning Azeroth. That'd be pretty cool, but
is probably not worth the effort.
